Doctors in Training

Our practice is an accredited training practice, supporting qualified doctors who are completing their specialist training in General Practice. These doctors work alongside our team for placements lasting up to 12 months. Dr Andrew Forder and Dr Nadeen Brown are the designated GP Trainers.

Occasionally, we may ask to video record a consultation for educational purposes. This will only be done with your explicit consent, and no intimate examinations will ever be recorded. You may ask for the recording to be stopped at any time.

If a recording is planned, the reception team will inform you when booking your appointment, and you will be asked to complete a consent form upon arrival. You are free to decline at any stage, just let the doctor know.

All recordings are handled in accordance with GDPR and Data Protection requirements, stored securely, viewed only by the GP trainee and their trainer, and permanently deleted once no longer needed.

Booking Appointments at the Practice

The practice operates a booking system for the Practice Nurse, Treatment Room Nurse, Phlebotomist and Substance Use Nurse.

These appointments can be booked by contacting reception on 01620 823 183 or in person at the practice. The reception team will ask for a brief indication of the reason for your appointment. This helps ensure that you are booked with the appropriate team member and that the correct amount of time is allocated.

Extended Hours Appointments

Drs Forder, Dr Brown, Dr MacRae, and Dr Morrice offer pre-bookable extended hours appointments. These can be booked by contacting reception on 01620 823 183. The reception team will ask for a brief indication of the reason for your appointment to ensure that you are booked in with the most appropriate GP and time of day for your problem.

General Practitioner (GP) Appointments

The practice operates an on-the-day triage system for all GP appointments. Patients are asked to contact the practice on the day they wish to be seen. Telephone lines open at 8:00am.

When you call, the reception team will ask for your contact number, who your Usual GP is, and the nature of your problem. This information is passed to the Duty Doctor, who triages requests based on the details provided. The more information that you can share, the better the Duty Doctor can prioritise requests. If you feel that your problem is urgent, please relay this information to the reception team.

Patients may request a telephone consultation or a face-to-face appointment. We aim to offer appointments on the same day, but there may be delays if you wish to see a specific doctor or if demand is particularly high.

The Duty Doctor will allocate appointments as needed—either with your usual GP or with an available doctor that day if appropriate. If a face-to-face appointment is required, the reception team will call you back with the time. Please note that there may be occasions when the Duty Doctor feels that a face-to-face appointment is more appropriate, even if you initially requested a telephone consultation. The Duty Doctor may also ask reception to book a routine appointment with your usual GP or another available GP.

A standard GP appointment is 15 minutes long.  If you have several problems to discuss, please let your doctor know at the beginning of the consultation.  That way both you and the GP can decide which problem to deal with immediately, and what might be better dealt with at another appointment with more time.

The practice reserves a number of appointments for routine reviews. These will be used by the GPs if they wish to review a patient, discuss tests carried out in the practice or a follow up after attendance at hospital. If a GP determines that a review is needed, they will instruct the reception team to contact you. You will be notified by reception with the GP’s message and offered a date / time for your routine review.

Home Visits

(Monday to Friday)

Home visits are provided for those patients whose illness or disability is sufficiently severe that it is not possible for them to attend the practice.  When requesting a home visit the receptionist will ask for your name, address, contact telephone number and details of your problem.

It is vital that you give accurate information to the receptionist as this enables the doctor to assess the urgency of the call.  These requests will be triaged by the Doctor and home visits will only be carried out at the discretion of the Doctor.

Requests for home visits should be made before 10.00am when possible. This assists the duty doctor to plan their day efficiently and avoids any unnecessary delay.

Missed Appointments

If you are unable to make your appointment, please contact the practice to cancel.  This can also be done from the practice website at   www.tynemedicalpractice.co.uk

Dental Problems

If you think you have a dental problem, you should contact a dentist as soon as possible.  Please avoid visiting your GP as there is little they are allowed to do by law (Dentists Act 1984).

You can access urgent dental care from:

  • Your registered dentist.
  • If you are not registered with a dentist, you can contact NHS 24 on 111 and they will give you details of dental services in your area or call Chalmers Emergency Dental Centre on 0131 537 8801 or 0131 537 8802.

Test Results

We do not routinely contact patients with results.  If a doctor requires to see the patient again or the patient requires further treatment we will contact you.

If you had a test / investigation arranged by the hospital you should contact them directly for the results if no further appointment / review has been arranged at the hospital.

For clinical safety it is the requester's responsibility to provide the patient with the result.

Interpretation & Translation Service

The practice complies with NHS Lothian’s policy to provide interpreters and translators when requested by the service user.

Please ask reception staff for further information.

Out Of Hours Service

The out of hours service operates from 6pm until 8am from Monday to Thursday and from 6pm Friday until 8am Monday.

If you require urgent medical attention outside the practice   opening hours, please telephone the Lothian Out of Hours Service on: 1 1 1

Repeat Prescriptions

If you are on long term medication, your doctor may arrange for you to obtain a repeat prescription without being seen on each occasion.

Prescriptions may be requested by post, at the reception desk or you can register and order them online using the practice website at  www.tynemedicalpractice.co.uk

The local pharmacy may also be able to order medication on your behalf.

Please allow 48 hour’s notice for your request to be processed and sent to your preferred pharmacy.  The local pharmacies will be able to advise on their turnaround times for prescriptions if you contact them directly.

We would be very grateful if you would order all of your repeat prescriptions at one time if possible, as this would greatly reduce our administrative workload.

From time to time, you may receive with your prescription, a request to see your doctor. This is because most medications require regular review to ensure their greatest benefit.  Please do book an appointment for a review if requested as this may impact on future requests for your prescriptions.

Registering With the Practice

If you live within the practice area, you are welcome to apply to join our practice list. You can register online at www.tynemedicalpractice.co.uk or collect registration forms from the reception desk.

As part of our registration process, we request photographic ID and proof of address (e.g. a utility bill or rent book). While we ask for this information for all registrations, you can still register even if you do not have these documents. However, we may still ask you to provide proof of address.

We continue to request this information because we have experienced cases where patients attempt to remain registered with our practice for convenience or due to difficulties registering elsewhere, despite living outside our practice boundary. If you move out with the boundary, you must register with your local practice. Remaining registered here while living outside the area affects the resources available to patients who do reside within our catchment.

The 3 practices at Newton Port rotate the new patient registrations on a weekly basis.  If you wish to register with a specific practice, you can still choose to do so.

You will also be asked to complete a new patient questionnaire which requests information on your health, details of any allergies and medication that you may take.  This data will be used until your medical records are received by the practice.
